Why Shop Used?

There are many reasons why shopping for a used Honda would be a better idea than purchasing a new one. The most notable difference, however, comes down to pricing. Let’s say you’re interested in one of Honda’s popular automobiles, the Accord. Placing a new Accord model against one from a few years ago will show a stark price difference. Of course, vehicles are often offered in a variety of trim levels that range in price, which means a pre-owned top-of-the-line Accord may still be relatively close in price to a newer model. If this becomes an issue, simply move down the list to the previous year, and you should expect to see lower prices. But why is this?

On the surface, it's pretty obvious why older vehicles are cheaper – it’s because they’re older and therefore have less 'life' left in them. However, the details are a bit more complex than that and have something to do with what’s known as depreciation. Depreciation is the act of new products slowly losing their value over time, and like any product, vehicles aren’t exempt from this rule. How bad is depreciation in the automotive market? The current depreciation rates mean a vehicle is 60% less valuable than it was only five years ago. Customers can’t simply purchase a new vehicle and swap it out a year later and expect a similar price either, and this is because, during the first year you own your new vehicle, it’ll drop in value by 20%, according to CARFAX.

Another reason to purchase a used vehicle is that there are more methods of shopping. There are two types of used vehicles – there’s pre-owned and Certified Pre-Owned (CPO.) There are numerous used Honda models we could recommend, but there’s a handful you should pay extra close attention to. For sedans, we recommend a used Honda Accord because it’s not only a familiar name, but it has a long-standing reputation for quality. Even when purchased new, the Accord is fairly priced, and in the used market, you can find models from a decade or longer ago, and it’ll still perform admirably and will continue to save you money because of exceptional fuel efficiency.

We also recommend a used Honda CR-V because it holds up extremely well over time. Whether it’s cargo space or performance we’re discussing, older CR-V models will even outperform the newer HR-Vs. The CR-V can be found with turbocharged engines, giving the driver more horsepower and torque than the non-turbocharged engines in the HR-V. That’s not to say a used Honda HR-V is a bad choice – not by a long shot. What it does mean, however, is that you can purchase a capable CR-V, save money, and still enjoy the performance you’re given all at once, not to mention the phenomenal cargo space.

Another easily recommendable Honda model to shoppers looking into the used market is the Honda Pilot. This mid-size SUV has ample performance, fuel efficiency, and an incredibly spacious interior to boot. The Pilot isn’t too cheap when purchased new, but that’s the beauty of the pre-owned market; you’ll find an older and cheaper model with similar performance. Best of all, if you’re interested in towing but you don’t want a pickup truck, a used Honda Pilot has got you covered with a 5,000 lb towing capacity. While it’s fair to say the Pilot is an excellent vehicle for vacationing, the same can be said for all three of these vehicles.
