The Honda CR-V Generations

The CR-V has been through six generations. The second generation CR-V launched with the 2002 model, replacing the grille, slightly rounding off the hood, and opening the headlights. You’ll undoubtedly find the first or second-generation CR-V at a low price, but you’re better off opting for a CR-V from at least the third generation, which launched with the 2006 model. The CR-V has seen several improvements in performance since the first model launched. The 1997 CR-V, the first to be released in America, came equipped with a 1972cc I-4 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission that outputs 126 hp and 133 lb-ft of torque. The first model of the second generation, the 2002 CR-V, comes with a 2.4L I-4 engine outputting 160 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. The result was an increase of 27% and 21.8% in horsepower and torque, respectively. The 2002 CR-V can have a five-speed manual transmission, the towing capacity was increased by 50% to 1,500 lbs, and the maximum cargo space increased from 67.2 cu.ft. to 72 cu.ft.

The 2012 CR-V was the launch of the fourth generation of the compact SUV. Aside from the changes made to the exterior more reminiscent of later models such as the sixth-generation, the 2012 CR-V includes a 2.5L I-4 engine paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The 2.5L I-4 engine helps provide 185 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque, which is a 15.6% uptick in horsepower over the 2.4L I-4 engine.

The succeeding generation started with the 2017 CR-V, with its 2.4L I-4 engine output of 184 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. However, performance would increase again should you opt for the turbocharged 1.5L I-4 engine that began with the 2017 model. By the sixth generation, the gasoline powertrain had dropped for a sole turbocharged engine, but let’s not forget the hybrid model exists too. The 2022 CR-V comes equipped with a turbocharged 1.5L I-4 engine delivering 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque, while the hybrid version has a 2.0L I-4 that produces 212 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque.
