How to Start Your Honda With a Dead Key Fob
Vehicles with push-button start and remote start are a major convenience, as they can help save time during your busy day-to-day life. However, some new drivers may only have experience with key fobs instead of traditional keys, which is where our team at Ryan Honda of Minot comes in.
Using Your Car with a Dead Key Fob
If you’re unsure how to unlock the car door with a dead key fob, look on the back of the key fob for a sliding tab. Once opened, you can use the physical key that’s present – pull the door handle and look behind it, where there should be a place to insert the key and turn to unlock.
Starting Your Engine
After using the physical key to unlock the door, get into the driver’s seat and put the physical key in the back of the key fob. Step on the brake while holding the fob close to the start/stop button, next to the steering wheel.
Push the button twice, and your Honda should start regardless of the battery strength currently in the key fob.
How to Replace the Battery in Your Key Fob
Check the Battery Type
The battery type should be written on the back of your key fob or on the battery itself.
Separate the Key Fob
There should be two parts to the key fob, and you need to separate them to remove the old battery. If there are screws holding the two parts together, use a smaller screwdriver to remove them.
Remove the Old Battery and Insert the New One
Make note of the battery type and its position for positive and negative terminals – remove the old one and replace it with the new. Be sure to avoid touching the terminals and interior of the key fob as much as possible to prevent corrosion.
Reconnect the Key Fob
When the new battery is in place, reconnect the two parts and replace the screw or re-tighten if needed.
